Love this piece though it sounds more old-school academic than might be necessary. Those of us who have worked and continue to fight from the street level up for effective impacts on social responsibility and fair profitability know that the knowledge of empowerment is good for everyone, no matter whether they are in a humanities course or not! Blending values of all types pays off with true impact, as you might want to see with this new book that builds on the concept that I helped with when it got started last century (http://blendedvalue.org).
But what I really like about the article is this quotation from Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State and Stanford professor. She made a strong case for “how a humanities education fosters creative thinking and teaches the ‘undervalued’ skill of persuasive writing. A well-written two-page essay to the secretary of state or the president, she said, ‘can make the difference in decision-making.’”
I completely agree. And I’m happy to offer the president two pages (no extra charge!) even when for other humans interested in making change happen, one page at a time might be sufficient.
